NET ZERO: FROM COMMITMENT TO PREVIOUS STEPS OF VIETNAMESE ENTERPRISES

At a typical enterprise of sustainable development - Vinamilk, the implementation of the circular economy model towards "nothing is discarded" has been strongly promoted to contribute to "cutting" emissions.
Net Zero by 2050 – this commitment of Vietnam at the United Nations Climate Change Summit 2021 (COP26) has become a historic milestone, setting the stage for building a green economy, lasting. For businesses, participating in the Net Zero process is considered to contain many challenges but also brings many opportunities, especially when grasping the trend of a green shift in the world and Vietnam.

A special program about Net Zero on VTV selected 3 keywords "Cut - Transform - Absorb" equivalent to 3 processes towards Net Zero. So what have businesses - the locomotive of the economy, been doing, from thinking to acting, from administration to execution to create a green production, a more sustainable economy with the goal of Net Zero?

CUTS

At a typical enterprise of sustainable development - Vinamilk, the implementation of the circular economy model towards "nothing is discarded" has been strongly promoted to contribute to "cutting" emissions.
The circular economy is understood as a circular cycle so that the output of one process can be the input of another process, thereby reducing resource exploitation, waste treatment costs, and reducing the environmental pollution.
At Vinamilk Green Farm Tay Ninh, which belongs to a system of 13 farms of the enterprise, every day 8,000 dairy cows produce 30 tons of manure. Waste is then collected by a modern system and treated with Biogas incubation technology. The "outputs" of this process are fertilizers, water, and gas that become the "inputs" of a new, closed cycle. As a result, each year the farm can save more than 2 billion VND in electricity costs and also significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

At another stage of the value chain, production, Vinamilk's Vietnamese dairy super factory with a capacity of 800 million liters of milk per year also reduces emissions by 10,000 tons of CO2 per year. The heat recovery and reuse system helps to recover up to 92% of the heat, reducing energy input, operating costs as well as negative impacts on the environment.
Or the application of an LGV self-propelled robot saves up to 62% of CO2 emissions compared to traditional forklifts due to energy saving and can calculate the shortest path to travel.

An expert at the British Standards Institute in Vietnam (BSI Vietnam) - the world's leading national standards agency - believes that a sustainable Net Zero transition needs to be based on a foundation of greenhouse gas reduction. “Currently, many Vietnamese enterprises have started measuring emissions, thereby applying many effective and long-term methods to reduce CO2 emissions. Vinamilk is a business that has done this well,” said Ms. Nguyen Dinh Minh Tam, Compliance and Risk Management Operations Director of BSI Vietnam.

CONVERT

Despite swift action, businesses also need to determine that the journey toward Net Zero will be long-term. Many big strategies need change and investment, especially in terms of processes, governance, and people. To do this, each business needs leaders who understand and monitor the entire process, moving towards upgrading voluntary Sustainable Development practices to strategic and administrative levels.
At Vinamilk, the business also took the first steps with a consistent orientation on sustainable development. From the principle of complying with environmental laws and regulations to the proactive practice of sustainability reporting more than 12 years ago.

All Vinamilk's farms have completed the installation of solar energy systems since 2020.

Early on, Vinamilk converted to many advanced and environmentally friendly technologies such as using green energy, and renewable energy... With a total installed capacity of 72.55 MWP, according to calculations, solutions Solar energy helps to reduce nearly 85,000 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to 4.6 million trees planted. In addition, the combination of using compressed natural gas (CNG), Biomass... to replace gasoline, and DO/FO oil... helps the rate of green energy use in production activities at Vinamilk reach nearly 87%. , contributing positively to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions.

ABSORB

When cutting and converting maximally, "absorption" is an important step toward the goal of balance, Net Zero. Currently, businesses have tried to plant many trees to absorb and compensate for the amount of CO2 emitted by the production process.

The green area at Vinamilk Green Farm farms maintains a coverage rate of over 70%. Trees are planted around to create a biological belt, protect the ecosystem and limit the impact from the outside environment.

From 2012 to 2020, Vinamilk and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated to implement the Fund of 1 million trees for Vietnam in 56 locations in 20 provinces and cities. Recently, Vinamilk also continued with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to sign a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of Tree planting to be carbon neutral towards Net Zero in 5 years from 2023 to 2027.

This green tree fund will directly contribute to "absorbing" CO2 for the business itself, helping to balance emissions in the future and also creating many added values such as people's livelihoods, improving ecology, landscape, etc. environment…
Sustainable development is increasingly being promoted and promoted by the Government, society, and business community, which means strong and comprehensive transformations. Businesses need to build a methodical roadmap from governance, and implementation to control. And a strong and consistent commitment to big, long-term goals like Net Zero is indispensable.
