Expanding scrap recycling

Sharing at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders held on April 18, Mr. Craig Bradshaw, General Director of Masan High-Tech Materials affirmed that the increased rate of Tungsten recycling contributed to helping this business achieve a record. in terms of revenue in 2022, with VND 15,550 billion, an increase of VND 1,985 billion, an increase of nearly 15% compared to 2021.

In 2022 Tungsten production from H.C.'s recycling operation. Starck (a subsidiary of Masan High-Tech Materials) grew 13% by focusing on increasing output from secondary sources (scrap recycling), in line with Masan High-Tech Materials' strategic direction is “reduce, reuse and recycle”. In addition to meeting 9% of the global demand for Tungsten products, Masan High-Tech Materials is also Europe's largest Tungsten scrap recycler, accounting for 14% of global recycling into products and New Tungsten-containing materials.

Most recently, Masan High-Tech Materials announced two global copyrighted Tungsten powder brands: 'starck2charge®' - used in the production of safe, fast-charging Li-ion batteries, which are expected to make an important contribution. important for the global electric car industry and 'starck2print®' - a tungsten powder composite product for industries using 3D printing, especially in the medical sector.

According to Mr. Craig Bradshaw, not stopping at these products, in Germany, Masan High-Tech Materials is focusing on increasing the recycling capacity of waste battery materials. Specifically, waste battery material is what is left in the battery when the hard materials are removed. This waste battery source can be collected from phones, computers, iPads, electric cars, etc., after use. Meanwhile, according to the World Tungsten Industry Association (ITIA), the recycling rate of cement carbide scrap can be as high as 80%, while the catalysts used containing Tungsten are usually high quality. piled up at hazardous waste sites.

With research projects and simulation experiments, Masan High-Tech Materials has so far developed and perfected the recycling process, allowing to recover of all: Lithium, Nickel, Copper, Cobalt, and Manganese from products waste batteries; while developing specific refining formulations to achieve higher Tungsten recovery efficiency. These technological achievements help Masan High-Tech Materials to no longer depend on natural mineral extraction, but enable the promotion of a circular business model through waste mining right in urban areas, generating revenue. Collecting, and treating production waste and recycling scrap, returning production materials, and end-of-life assets become raw materials to create new materials and new products.

This is also the driving force that makes Masan High-Tech Materials confidently commit to shareholders, this year, this business focuses on building a circular economy model that fully integrates the closed cycle chain; At the same time, it aims to achieve a revenue of 16,500 - 18,200 billion VND, from 6 - 17% compared to 2021.

Turning Vietnam into the leading Tungsten recycling center in the region

One of the messages repeatedly affirmed and emphasized by the leaders of Masan High-Tech Materials at this year's Annual General Meeting of Shareholders is the driving force that impels this business to create a revolution in renewable energy. creation, new materials, green growth, environmental protection, and sustainable development. In particular, Masan High-Tech Materials has always been steadfast in its goal of maintaining its position as the world's leading supplier of high-tech and sustainable materials.

Currently, Masan High-Tech Materials' materials products have reached the global market. Specifically, 45% of the company's products are sold in Europe, 22% are sold in North America, 18% are sold in China and made in China for the Chinese market; 15% are sold in the rest of the world. Masan High-Tech Materials has an extensive customer network, with more than 300 customers in 30 different countries. In particular, major industrial economies such as the US, Europe, and Japan have now classified Tungsten, Fluorite, and Bismuth as essential materials, requiring a supply strategy.

According to Mr. Craig Bradshaw, to supplement the supply of high-tech materials from recycling to meet the increasing demand of the world market, in addition to H.C. Starck in Germany, Masan High-Tech Materials is promoting the construction of the first and largest tungsten recycling plant in Asia in Thai Nguyen. Masan High-Tech Materials is conducting a feasibility study to develop an initial treatment process at a Tungsten processing plant in Vietnam, allowing scrap to be burned in Vietnam instead of calcining them elsewhere and then brought back to Vietnam. “We hope to put Vietnam at the forefront of recycling and become a leading recycling center in the Asia Pacific region. This will make it possible to process and recycle more scrap than it does today, which is part of the shift to mining "urban resources," said Craig Bradshaw.

Sharing the strategic vision for the future, Mr. Danny Le - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Masan High-Tech Materials said: “In the not too distant future, Masan High-Tech Materials is not only a supplier of materials. the world's leading high-tech products, but also directly participate in and lead the global technology consumer products market. We are confident to own a high-class, comprehensive, and environmentally friendly Tungsten recycling platform, and at the same time create new sources of raw materials, this is the strategic pillar of Masan High-Tech Materials' success in now and future".
